Stainless steel, painted mild steel, or polypropylene
The shell is largely thermal and cosmetic. Plastic shells need larger air gaps to keep the exterior below touch-safe temperatures.
Chrome-plated or stainless steel wire
Steel wire holds shape at temperature and lets radiant heat through, which a solid tray would block.
Copper coil on a steel core, with a permanent magnet keeper
The carriage is held down electromagnetically. Cutting power drops the latch — which is why the toast pops when you press cancel, and why a toaster always releases in a power cut.
Small PCB with a resistor-capacitor network and a transistor
The browning dial is a variable resistor setting a charge time, not a temperature sensor. This is why the second round of toast comes out darker on the same setting.
Painted or stainless steel
A serviceability feature, and the only real maintenance access. Crumb build-up on the elements is the main fire risk in a toaster.
The browning control is a timer, not a thermostat, on all but a few premium models. Nothing measures the bread. That single design decision explains most of what people find frustrating about toasters.
Toasters are usually riveted or use security screws, and the elements are brittle mica assemblies that rarely survive removal. Cleaning the crumb tray is realistically the whole maintenance story.
